She's the one

She's the one I talk to every day, sometimes twice a day. If I haven't heard from her in two days, I have to call to see if she's OK and her dogs didn't chew up the phones. We've been friends for 26 years. She's the one that introduced me to my husband.

She's the one I can talk to about absolutely anything and I believe she knows me better than anyone else in this world. She's the one that can call me on the carpet and I don't go into defense mode. She's the one I can call and do weird, interesting things with and she'll always be game. She's the one I can trust with my life. She's the one who's parents home became my home away from home.

She's the one that can always make me laugh. She's the one that understands that sometimes urge to just run away in a motor home. She's the one I called on 9/11, when the 35W bridge collapsed and when Barack won. There is never a dull moment with her.

She's the one that has scrimped by for a year while looking for a job. She's the one that has had to endure the calls from bill collectors to work out deals. Whose husband's hours were just cut back. She's gone on interview after interview to be beat out by the one with the penis. She's the one that is probably going to be offered the job tomorrow. The great job. The one she deserves. The job fate has been holding for her until the last possible minute. The job that's going to take her to St. Louis. And it's hitting me. She's the one I'm going to miss.

Oh, I'm glad you're friend is getting a job worthy of her abilities. It's sad not to see her so much (is she moving ?) but it's also amazing how you can have entirely satisfying connections with dear friends even if intermittent, because the ground is there...in the way you describe, people who are orienters (if that's a word).

Oh Auntie! :( I'm sorry. It hurts soooo bad when someone you love moves away. No matter how you're connected to them. Sisters, friends, loves, etc. My heart goes out to you. Suck up as much of her as you can while she's here! Thank goodness for cell phones!

I think what you've got there is a best friend there. Hopefully, she's the one who will stay in touch and when you get to visit it will seem like you never missed a beat.

Oh no! I had a friend like that and then? She dumped me! I mourned her like a lover. At least you'll still be friends, but St.Louis IS far!

How very beautifully written and sad. You are indeed lucky to have such a strong and amazing friendship. Change can be a good thing, regardless of how difficult to accept at first. One of my closest friends moved home to Ireland several years ago. I was heartsick. Although less frequent visits in the coming days are likely, you have a treasure nonetheless. Enjoy it, in whatever form it takes. Besides, you never know what's around the corner. Maybe, like my friend, a few years later, they'll move back.

That is so sad and so happy at the same time. In these days of email and Twitter and Facebook and virtually free long-distance calls, you two will be able to stay in touch.

I feel good for her jobwise, but bad for the both of you. Good thing is that you have so many more ways to communicate nowadays.

There are so many ways you can still talk daily -- it just becomes more difficult to be there for her in person... your friendship will survive!

I'm so sorry... But at the same time with the job situation this country is facing (the lack thereof), I'm happy for her. Tough times are ahead and are going to get even tougher. Or like your friend and for a bunch of people I know, they are already here. Sad...

But keep your chin chopper up lady, it will work out :)
